BIOINF 526
BIOINF 526 (BIOLCHEM 526) - Introduction to Bioinformatics and computational Biology
Instructor: Athey
T,Th 8:30 – 10:00
4 credits
This course is an introduction to the problems and techniques of bioinformatics and their application to biological and biomedical research. It is intended for a general audience and is suitable for all PIBS students. Bioinformatics students are required to take Section 3 as their laboratory.
This course will be a series of integrated lectures. The basic areas to be covered are: high through-put experiments and biological databases; basic probability and statistics for Bioinformatics; methods of analysis of sequence data; the theory and design of databases, access to genomic information, sources of data, and tools for data mining; proteomics data and analysis; systems biology and deterministic and stochastic modeling of biological systems; and clinical informatics. Examples are drawn from microarray analysis, molecular models of evolution, protein structure prediction, circadian rhythms and progression of infectious diseases.
